Mainly water

I have always loved tools that let you explore the world through a screen: travel through it, settle somewhere, observe it.
In Mainly water, each image is an algorithmic exploration of a specific place on Earth, generated from real geographic data. The protocol is simple: a list of cities, a request to the OpenStreetMap API through Leaflet, and heavy visual processing with CSS to bring about a kind of tipping over, the overhead view of the map turning into a twilight landscape or a fluorescent pond.
