This body of projects is linked to Delocalized Narratives, of which it is both the starting point (detection, removal) and a kind of culmination (accumulation).
I have always been drawn to the visual force of an image in which one or more parts have been cut out or covered. Drawing solid shapes lets us imagine subjects, scenes or stories, and brings new forms to the fore.
This project looks at the way algorithms optimise the use of space (in particular for storing and transporting objects or data). It also makes visible images that usually remain hidden and serve only to train image recognition and analysis models. In doing so, it also reveals, in a way, the biases of certain datasets.
The image below comes from the ongoing research. It highlights the cinematic and narrative potential of series of similar images and subjects once they have been framed, cut out and juxtaposed by the algorithm.
The remaining images, stripped of all or part of their subjects, tell other stories too: this plane, the only one to escape a detection that, like an anti-aircraft battery, makes its teammates disappear; or this unexpected dialogue between emptiness and the lamps on a ceiling.
Not pictured is a series of photographs taken in Kassel in 2012. Here too the image is stripped of its subject, this time by masking. The series grew out of a kind of challenge: not to photograph a single artwork or label during three days of visiting.
